Mordor is over and now it is time to prepare for the next outing.

SW Idaho Overlanding is heading North! Well not really. More like heading South to Northern Nevada.

First I will be heading to high places. Driving to nearly 9000 feet to alpine lakes. If all goes well I will stay a day and do a bit of hiking.

The rest of the trip will be exploring ghost towns and mine sites.

I am not expecting anything too technical for most of this trip, but there may be some short sections that might keep you on your toes. The trip will be at least 50% dirt and some roads may be just opened for the year so it could be a bit bumpy in places.

Day1 is going to be the longest for driving. Trying to put down close to 300 miles with a lot of dirt in one day can be tiring. This however will be evaluated as road conditions present themselves. Plan is to stay at a improved camp site so be prepared for $ unless we find a nice spot somewhere else. Dispersed camping is a bit limited. Campground is half fist come first served so I hope coming in Thursday night will give us options.
Day 2 Is a planned drive to the top with lunch and some hiking. We are near 10,000 feet so keep that in mind if you plan to do some hiking. A nearby peak is 11037 feet.
Day 3 is back on the road to see a mining/ghost town area. Will probably spend the night somewhere in this area. There are a lot of standing buildings and equipment in the area so plan to take some time to explore.
Day 4 Starting the trip back home. Hitting a couple more ghost towns on the way back and spending our last night out near the Idaho/Nevada border.
Day 5 Heading home.

There are two portions of this trip that are long distance without fuel. Going down and coming back. There will be some high dollar gas available on the way back at about the half way point. Make sure you have enough fuel reserves to bridge these distances. Remember driving on dirt burns more fuel.

I have been looking forward to this trip for some time now. Getting closer.

Lava Tracks! October (to be announced)

With the last Mordor trip, a trip was discussed for October in the same area. No set dates at this point, but at least a 4 week notice should be posted.

This would be a base camp type trip with day outings. Probably would be a 4 day trip. This will allow some exploration of lava fields and surrounding terrain features.

I am hoping to include a rugged, over lava road for this trip. This would require vehicles to have good strong off road tires and possible higher clearance. I can not find much info on the road, but it does appear to be open for vehicle travel, but it is not maintained.

Keep the calendars open and look for updates here. See you on the trails.

This trip is one week out!
I just got confirmation that the pass we have to cross has just been opened last week from snow. Road repairs were expected this week or next so still a toss up on road conditions in this area, but the road is passible at this time. Cutting it closer than I though I would be since I did not think they got that much snow this year.

We made it back from "Ruby!" yesterday afternoon. What a trip! 5 days of dirt roads, hiking, camping, and exploring ruins. Thanks to all that came along to share the experience with us! It was a lot of fun. George.
