Thanks!
Probably the closest I ever came to "car camping" was this and that's only because of the folding table:
Basically I was chasing the a trio of galaxies called the "Leo Triplet". At 300mm the "field of view" FOV is still really wide for astro photography and additionally not having a proper tracking mount meant that I was half doing this. These are things you can't see with the naked eye so I had the laptop doing "plate solving" (matching star charts) effectively in order to find out where I am in the sky
Plate solving looks like this as an example:
You can see how much sky got captured relative to the actual subject in questions:
The difficulty there was to rush out at 12am and drive around 2 hours to my destination then get as much exposure time as I could before rushing to get home again before the traffic concentration increases as I need to traverse a major artery highway to get home.... so minimal exposure time (I don't even think it was a few hours, probably only around 20 - 40 mins) then run back so I don't get stuck or suffer from major anxiety attacks....
My aim really is to find somewhere devoid of people in my travels (not gona happen locally sadly as population density is so high) in order to really relax and do stuff like the above without feeling like being rushed. Hopefully if my health ever improves I'll be able to get out again and adventure more. Even more so if I am able to find someone to go with and maybe get a truck or SUV. In all honesty I'm so excited about this, I just wish things were easier :-)
