Hi There,

I will be traveling to South Dakota for work in a few weeks. I am considering extending my trip and go exploring the Black Hills and surrounding areas on my way back to Colorado. I am looking for dispersed camping suggestions for any of those regions. I know there is a fire ban in SD which kind of puts a damper on things as I dont have a propane "fire" but I am sure I could make do. I a mnot opposed to pay sites, however I would prefer something more interesting.

Any suggestions for places that would be....
  1. Not extreme to get to. I want to get off the beaten path but not go overboard with it. I am looking for quite places with a view. I dont mind neighbors as long as enough distance to be enjoyable and not get in each others way.
  2. I like to fly fish so if there is water nearby that would be great...but not a deal breaker. This would be a bonus.
  3. views! would love to watch a sunset and wake up to an inspirational sunrise.
I have heard good tings about the grasslands, but can also be windy and hot. (not that I cant deal with either)

I will be traveling in a suburban (huge for solo trip but its my 4x4).

Thanks in advance!

Not sure exactly where you're going to be, but there is dispersed camping, on a cliff, with a great view of Badlands National Park off highway 240, just south of Wall. I stayed there the first week of July, and the view was breathtaking. Let me know if you would like exact coordinates.

Hey, I'm interested in the location your mentioning for dispersed camping near the Badlands National Park. I'm stopping by there on the way to Glacier. Are you familiar with any other dispersed camping sites in that region worth while?

Thanks!

That's the only one I stayed at while I was in SD. There are a few others in the Black Hills. I use the app FreeRoam. It shows dispersed, free, and paid campsites. You can filter to only see free sites which include dispersed sites.
