I was wondering how would one go about becoming part of a search and rescue team and or back country EMS? I was a firefighter and EMT, some time ago. Been out of it for awhile now but would love to be able to possibly be a part of something like SAR and such. If anyone has some info on this that would great! Not sure if it matters but i'm in the Southeast (GA). Thanks!

Hi Lil Bear,
I'm also a retired EMS/Fire department member. I've been out it for some time. My son just finished the NJ State fire academy. I would suggest contacting ur county FIRE/EMS administration, they can help a lot. I'm also thinking of doing something SAR. I have my Drone part 107 commercial drone pilot license and have been asked by my local fire chief if I would like to assist with Fire scene and SAR support with my drone. Of course I said yes. I have a crazy job that prevents me from running active with department but I still want to contribute .. Good luck and thank you for your service.

SARS is operated by the County Sheriff Department, go to your local Count Sheriff web page and they will have a page for SAR volunteering. As for backcountry EMT, most are from the city volunteer fire departments, or members of SAR, at least here where I am.

This sounds great, i've been thinking of getting my feet wet in drone's and this area too. Keep us posted on it! Spent 15 Years on the Fire Department, moved out of a district with Volunteers and now back in, but damn...i do not miss getting up at 2 am for false alarms.. LOL!

In response to the original question, the biggest thing is just finding out in your area who runs the SAR teams. Are there already Volunteer groups helping as well? CERT is an option as well.

Yea most of the req's should just be the ICS courses which work anywhere.
