Chris, I see you're on the east coast like me - just with a better beer selection. Something else to think about is driver side or passenger side. I don't know if you have an awning or not, but that is what predicated a driver-side opening for my tent.

Originally placed on the driver side, I found that the awning provided significantly more shade on the passenger side when were backed up to the shore, as is the norm in the Outer Banks. The following photos were taken about a year apart, but at roughly the same time of year and same time of day. The longer shadow clearly speaks for itself.

I roughed mine in both ways and found tge side worked best for me. With it out the back there just was enough space to work under it with the ladder there.
I have a small Smittybilt rtt so obviously if it were a bigger tent it would be no problem .

I do driver side not passenger. I find that when I’m accessing my vehicle for random things it’s usually either the driver door or rear tail gate. I have a Tacoma and built my own camping drawer for it, so opening to the side makes most sense for my set up as the drawer comes out 5 feet and then extends another 44” with the cutting board and stove slide outs. Well, After some careful measuring and thought, I'm going to stick with passenger side. The tent will overhang the sides by more than I would like if I turn it.

Chris, as a RRT owner I've placed my tent opening both in the rear and off the passenger side of my Jeep. I prefer having my RRT placed with the opening over the right side due 1. ladder location 2. I didn't want my tent overtop my cooking station 3. better sleeping (easy to level Jeep) 4. I found it easer to use the zipper when packing up. 5. I think the RRT looks better when placed on the Jeep this way.
