I know that spot...........The San Juan's are our favorite by a mile.
[...]
PM me if you know in advance you'll be in the DSM area with time for a sandwich/beverage, we're 10 minutes North and can meet with a little notice. [...]
As to losing out on the job interview, I usually prefer bovine both as dinner as well as companions.
It's ours as well. We try to get out there at least once every year; the wife with her camper van plus 4 dogs, and I with Ruby :).

Will do. You can do the same when you're around the Omaha/Council Bluffs area, we're about 40 miles North of there in the hills. Since we're self-employed, I can usually make it down within 30-45 minutes ...

Yeah, didn't care for it anyhow; the guy rubbed me wrong, and the prospect of having to commute from W. IA to DC every week (I sure as heck wouldn't have moved to the East coast...) wasn't too thrilling either.

I daily drove a 2-door jk for a number of years. I think long story short is that lifting the Jeep will have a much greater impact on cog then adding a rtt. That said, if you're considering a trail where rollovers are known to occur, I'd probably leave the rtt at home and bring a cot or ground tent. From the sounds of it though I think you'll be fine with an rtt.

If you haven't already, I'd consider looking into a long travel front sway bar like a Currie antirock. It greatly increases off-camber stability.. I actually sold the power disconnecting sway bar off my Rubicon in favor of the Currie.

If I kept my Jeep any longer I was going to have a proper roll cage installed, if anything for freeway rollovers cause the windshield frame on those doesn't hold up well in accidents. The never ending list of Jeep mods
Thanks. Yeah, those things are kind of like a bottomless pit :). I kept mine pretty much stock until I hit 36k miles. Then I installed the LED headlights (the OEM lights suck...), the Aries aluminum front bumper with winch (10,000# WARN), D-rings, recovery hooks, and off-road lights connected to the fog lights. Kept the rear bumper OEM for now. Since I am solo 99.99% of the time, I figured being able to self-recover was of utmost importance... Also re-flashed the ECU using the Superchips Flashpaq device (87 octane, slightly updated shift points, DRL mod, fog lights/off-road lights stay on with high beams, and use of the rear locking diff in 4HI,) then added the Goby Stealth rack. Finally got the RTT, which I was going to install this week-end, but then the wife had other ideas - oh well, the best laid plans of men and mice...

With the rack and RTT, I am now looking into widening the stance a bit, hence the wheels/tires considerations. This then leads to the added size & weight of the spare, which may necessitate a different-from-OEM spare tire carrier. Which in turn might necessitate replacing the rear bumper, and _may_ lend itself to add some Jerry Can carriers as well (with all the added weight/wind resistance, the MPGs went from ~17.5 to ~15, and will likely drop even more with the added RTT weight/resistance.)

Like I said. Bottomless. Dominos. Falling...

Fortunately, I have until March/April before I need to get out West again for my Spring photo tour... For now, need to get out to some art fairs to get the funding stocked up for all this ;)

Pulled the trigger...

Ordered 16x8 steel rims with 305/70R16 M/T tires to replace my 17" rims and OEM tires (might sell those...) Will definitely widen the stance, and I think it'll make Ruby look much more aggressive as a side benefit :). Also ordered an ARB awning to be mounted driver side (the RTT opens to the passenger side) to add a bit more shade to sit under at camp.

Will post some photos once I get the tires...

Wotan- can you post a picture of how your rig looks with those added mods? I’m trying to get an idea of what I want to do.
