Access to the Kelso Dunes Trailhead via High Clearance Only
Detour February 22 – March 8
February 19, 2021: The Kelso Dunes access road to be improved. The road will be closed for a restabilizing and re-grade project February 22 to March 8. The road needs significant repair, and the project will improve both safety and access.
Access to the Kelso Dunes trailhead is available via a detour along the Powerline Road, which runs parallel, roughly 1,000 ft., south of the Kelso Dunes Road. The Powerline Road is not suitable for all street vehicles. Only High Clearance and 4WD should travel the narrow rocky dirt road.
After completion of the repairs and improvements, visitors will note a smoother road to one of the preserve’s most popular destinations.

Mojave National Preserve was established by the 1994 California Desert Protection Act. The 1.6-million-acre preserve encompasses much of the Mojave Desert, as well transitional elements of the Great Basin and Sonoran deserts. Singing sand dunes, volcanic cinder cones, Joshua tree forests, and carpets of wildflowers are all found at this preserve. A visit to its canyons, mountains and mesas will reveal long-abandoned mines, homesteads, and rock-walled military outposts. About half of the preserve is congressionally designated Wilderness. Located between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Mojave provides serenity and solitude from major metropolitan areas. Learn more at www.nps.gov/moja.
