Hello,
As we started our journey into Overlanding in 2009, it was a struggle to find the right concept.
So, our first Rig was one we had for about 9 years.
VW T3. From common to Expedition
2009

2015


In the meantime we had some vehicles like our buggy
2013


And off course the Frontera
2016

In 2017 we sold the T3 and bought/build our trailer.

Then the Frontera failed us just before our second trip to Morocco.
So, the Jeep era came.

It was still very standard when we drove to Morocco that time.
And now, as it is ready to roll in 2020 we are grounded at the moment. But I hope soon we will go out and drive again.
Unfortunally bigger trips will be a no go this year, but we will go out.
And this is the latest of our Rigs.

And before we will go out again, it will have changed again. We keep upgrading it all.

tell us why did you choose a Jeep + Trailer instead of a van?
Room/space or flexibility? Offroad-capability?

Hy,

First of all, we choosed the Frontera and the Trailer. That was the plan.
The reasons were the following;

1. due my fysical dissabilities (reumatisme) I have not that much energy.
2. all energy used by building up campsite will be lost for other things.

So, we made a list of requirements which our new vehicle should have.
1. If I wanted to sleep during a trip, as a break, it had to be a walk to my sleeping place, get in bed and sleep. Wake up, walk to the drivers seat and drive. That fast. No huslte.
2. I should have a daily drive. ( which meant at that time, the frontera would stay, and I wanted to build a mercedes Gwagon into a Campervan.)
3. Setting up camp for just a sleep over, had to be very easy.
4. Setup for a lunch, dinner, breakfast had to be very easy.
5. When at camp, if needed, I would be able to leave camp without packing everything up.

As the project would be a lot of money, I couldnt hold the thought of the Frontera and the G wagon.
So at that moment we decide to build a bigger and better trailer.

The requirements for the trailer had to be;
1. As wide as the Frontera. 1.60 mtr. The Jeep is 1.63mtr. That is one of the reasons I bought the Jeep.
2. As high as the Frontera with a loaded Roof rack. Same is for the Jeep.
3. Enough storage for all our gear.
4. No gear on the bed. At least my side of the bed.
5. A kitchen unit which would be used from the outside.
6. Very much off road capability.
7. Repairable during travel with the tools and materials found at nearby shops.
8. We can sit in it, but main purpose is sleeping in it.
9. Getting dressed in the trailer.
10. I had to go to sleep and get back on the road when on travel within a minute.

The trailer was build with that in mind. And now after almost three years, it stil does the job perfectly.
Being flexible to leave the trailer at a campsite is very good, and so, I still have my Jeep as a daily drive.
And the Jeep is buidl up as an Overlanding Rig, but without all the kitchen gear and the extra storage areas.
So, I can go on a trail within minutes with the standard package, but when I hook up the Trailer I can go Overlanding within an hour when I am home.

Thats were my thoughts when choosing for a Rig and a Trailer.
