Renting an overlander in SoCal

Thought this would be a good thread for the forum on getting started (boot camp). My wife and I like to camp and are debating about getting an overlanding vehicle. Seems like the smartest starting point is to rent one for a trip or two.

Any recommendations for a good rental company in Southern California? I see a few online, but personal recommendations would be great.

Favorite vehicles to rent? Since we live down here, we'll probably be doing desert.

Recommendations for NorCal? We have family up there, too. In which case, we're talking woods (Shasta County).

I will watch this thread with interest. I am looking to bring my family to california next year or latest year after for 3 week vacation. I will be looking to rent a vehicle for a few days to try out some trails. Rest of the time will be spent in disney to keep the kids happy and maybe san fran.

I've seen places that rent Wranglers. You may have a tough time finding a Land Cruiser or 4 Runner.
