Reno Overlanding was started to encourage and educate individuals to safely explore our vast natural resources through overlanding while understanding that the needs and objectives are different for everyone.

EDITED: We started the group in January of 2018 , and have held monthly meetings, day runs, and Overnighters in the local Reno and surrounding area.

So @sierrabob , @Greg , and I along with our wives took a pre-run on the proposed Frenchman Lake trail the other day. Here are some pics of what you'll see.

Oh... that Crystal Peak! I had been mapping the Crystal Peak 26.7 miles south of that one. Anyone been to both of them and can offer a comparison for rockhounding?

Are you talking about the one off Dog Valley above Verdi, NV? Then yes, I have been to both. Both have some good finds. The one above Verdi is more traveled and picked at.

HAM (which a few of us have), CB, and FRS. This is the variety we had on runs lately. I use HAM. I loan one of my FRS radios to someone who has a CB to relay info to CB users since HAM is the main comm device. I position a HAM in lead, middle, and tail then have the others fall in between.

A Crystal Mine and a Beach – The Frenchman Lake Day Run Recap

The day started at 8:30 AM with 13 Rigs gathering at the Bordertown Casino rendezvous point. Participating in the Run where folks not only from the Reno Overlanding group but some adventurous participants from the Sierra Foothills club out of Placerville, CA. Adding to our trail-run group we had folks come up from Auburn, CA; Sacramento, CA; and as far away as Wisconsin. We had a total of 21 adventurers and 7 well behaved companions…dogs that is.

After a Trail Run and Communications briefing, we pushed off at 9:00 AM and headed north up 395, exited on Rt 70 at Hallelujah Junction, and then turned right onto route 284. The trip from Bordertown to the entrance of our pre-determined trail route USFS 24N44 took about thirty minutes.



At this point, once all the rigs were on the trail, we pulled to the side of the trail to allow Rigs to air down before proceeding up the trail.



We started at 5046 feet and wound our way through trees and pinstriping areas to end up at 7629 feet at Crystal Mine. Overall most of the trail was easy until the climb to Crystal Mine. At this point, the trail became rutty and the dry loose dirt caused some slipping. A bit further up, there was a bit of a moderate rock-climb, but all were able to get through without difficulty. Once at the top, the views were great though the smoke from the CA fires still lingered in the air.



After a leisurely lunch, multiple discussions about each other’s rigs, and a hike up the top of Crystal Mine, we packed up and started our descent through more pinstriping greenery. On the way down, some were lucky enough to see several Bucks…one having at least 10 points…. Eventually our circuitous route took us back to 5446 feet and put us at the beach on the high side of Frenchman Lake. At this point, some folk had to head back home, and Dave and Marc took off into the hills on the high side of the lake to continue their adventure with an Overnight stay. Other really adventurous folk enjoyed a swim in the lake’s cold waters while the rest relaxed on the beach and got to know a bit more about each other.



It was a fun day. Thanks for coming. The Reno Overlanding group looks forward to seeing everyone on the next run.
