I'm finding it a little hard to find good routes in my area (SF Bay Area) and join up with local members. The Downloadable routes section is great, but a lot of that stuff is across the country from me.

The Regional West Coast section is great, but not a whole lot of activity in there and it's not very organized.

It would be great to have local folks post their routes, suggest to others, and ultimately get a group together to do some of these routes.

Perhaps we have a routes section in each regional section? Or else be able to tag/sort the routes section by region.

I often find myself finding places to go by bouncing between the routes section and the West Coast regional section

just thinking out loud :grinning:

I was thinking of something similar. I'm in LA, and I'm trying to figure out "what trails/routes/adventures are 'weekendable' from my location" - and based on what I can tell, there isn't a great way to find/track that type of thing.

A sortable trail map would be great. Pins for each route, color coded for difficulty. Add the ability to turn pins on/off or sort based on route length and features - perfection!

Hey guys - with the new member map we are releasing (in progress), you are able to add your own locations and trails, so all members can add locations. That is working now. From an admin perspective, I need to create the location type so it is selectable when you add location, but then, members can add trails. What do you think of that? I would love to get feedback. At that point, it is as easy as looking at the map for trails in the area you are interested in. Let me know what you think. I'll turn this thread into a test of sorts, and we can iterate until it is cool...or let me know if that is NOT useful, and we will think of something else.

As we make the new map go live - it will be changing a lot, and you may run into issues. Consider this a "soft launch".

Thank you guys!

Just did a route from Minden NV to Yearington NV and i did run into a washed out trail 10 miles in. Kept all my trail info so i can post it once i learn this site better. Have also started planning a trip to Overland West Expo in May 2018 starting in Topaz Lake NV through the desert. Will see if anyone wants to join me.

Do we realy need to invent hot water all over again? Can't we just use Wiciloc instead and use a specific name or tag on it like #OB? that way it is easy to look for routes and you can folow them from your phone. Or is this a stupid idea?

Other trail apps and maps are great resources, but with the direction we are going with the Member Maps and our app, we want to incorporate member communication via the map, as well as broadcast (like, "help"). Other maps do not provide this, and are not member specific, but they are great resources none the less.

Do you think there would be any way to incorporate uploading of GPX/KML files? I think that would be interesting so that members could look at the map and see all the routes nearby rather than the start point of the trail? This could also help with planning of bigger overlanding routes where you could possibly tie into several OB routes that have been uploaded by users.

Check BLM maps, they will show dirt roads and trails. then cross reference with Google maps.

This does sound like reinventing the wheel ... there's already interactive maps on trailsoffroad.com, alltrails.com, www.offroadtrailguide.com, etc. They don't incorporate some of the features Michael talked about, so what I'd love to see is collaboration with Gaia Maps (for example) that supported overlaying OB-specific inputs, or alternatively, use Intents (Android) or App Extensions (iOS) to allow call-outs or embedding of something that already supports GPX + ratings + annotations. That way it can be limited to members, and you can also utilize the offline modes (and I don't have to download another 50 GB of offline maps.)

You have LOTS of trails within a 2 hours drive, even more, 4 hours out. You didn't state where in the greater Bay Area you live, or whether you want it as a Friday ditch the Job, and camp for 2 nights. Drive down 280, exit at Woodside, drive west, up and over, drop down into Pescadero. Have Lunch at Duarte's... determine if you want to go North up the 1, or South. That small range has lots of dirt roads, and redwoods right in your backyard. The Sierra's have 1000's of miles of trails, and OHV's. The rural area's of Marin, Sonoma, Mendocino also have lots of "Between here, and there" trails. Our 88 62Series had 100K on it before 1992, when we moved from Menlo Park to Boise, ID. It now has over 300K it. If you haven't been up the 1, all the way into Oregon, that too is worth the trip. Plan a trip into Buck's Lake, lots of trails to explore. If you haven't been to Lassen, Shasta, Yosemite, - GO!
