Just bought this truck and looking forward to building it out. It's a 2006 Tacoma SR5. 4.0L V6, double cab, long bed. The only "mods" I've done so far are valve stem caps since there weren't any on it when I bought it. The first actual mod I plan on doing is spraying the fender flares with bed liner. The front right flare was cracked so I have to epoxy and sand it first. Eventually I'd like to get a frame build in the bed and put a rooftop tent on it, maybe a 2 inch lift with some beefier tires, and a brush guard with a winch.

I love the double cab tacomas. Cant wait to see what you do with it. Depending on what you want to do with it the 2" lift is a good amount but I always feel like the tacomas look better with a 3".

It'll be an overland vehicle. I figure 2" will be enough to give me enough room for slightly bigger tires so I have that little bit of extra clearance when exploring. Don't plan to do any rock crawling or Baja racing. Guess I'll have to look up pics of 2" and 3" lifts to see what they look like. If I can go 3" without any ill effects I just might do it.

Good choice of rigs. 3" is about the max you can go without any long term affects. At 3" you will probably need after market upper control arms for a good alignment.

That was a concern of mine with going too high of a lift. I want the extra clearance but don't want alignment or stability issues.

Thanks. I'll check them out. I have a lot to learn about suspension before I try to do a lift myself. This build will be an educating experience for sure.

Yeah I was going to do 2" on my 4Runner but found a screaming deal for 3" and I'll have steel bumpers so it may not be a full 3"

Look on YouTube for the total chaos suspension install video. It makes it look as easy as it really is.

Picked up some replacement parts from the junkyard today. Two new sun visors, 4 bed rail cleats, and the cup holder insert. This was the best junkyard I've ever been to. When you arrive you sign in and tell them what vehicle you want parts for and what you're looking for. They check their inventory then an employee drives you to the vehicle(s) with the parts you need and removes them for you. Full service! This might be more common elsewhere but it was the first time I'd ever been to something like that.

Had a Tacoma. Did bilstein 5100 at 2.5". Loved the ride. My friend had 3" Spacer lift with heavy springs up front and had no problems. I suggest going to 285 tire. I had 265/75-16 and always regretted not going bigger. You will have to trim plastic at 285 though.

Any rubbing on turns or bumps? I don't want to run into issues with the bigger tires before I have the cash to do a proper lift.

I can guarantee you will need to chop the cab mount if you go 285's. 265's will mostly fit without a lift. They might rub on the mud flaps at full lock.

As far as trimming is concerned, are there any write ups/before and afters on this? I'd be interested to see what it entails.

So that's not just plastic trimming. There's some metal being cut there. Am I correct?

Yes sir, The cab mount is steel. It's fairly easy to cut with a sawzall or grinder with a cut off wheel. If it's cut back far enough it doesn't really need the end plate welded on. I've done a couple of my friends trucks already still need to do mine.
