it did indeed.. just a little backstory
8-17
last obstacle to the exit,
one more attempt..
sandy ledge to the right, rock on left
bouncing 31" tires and an open diff
rear passenger tire drops off ledge, traction lost
car leans, tilts, that moment when you realize
rolled driver over passenger, no seatbelt
head on the ceiling, quick push to regain position
second roll
watching the scenery pass by
foliage, sky, foliage, sky
big hit front driver
somersault front over rear, interesting sight how the sky rolls by
after the flip, vehicle comes to a rest on passenger side
driver, passenger, back roll up and sun glass intact, all others gone
body bent and dent
exit rear passenger window, doors unable to open
quickly try to clean the site and organize, gather go bag and head off, after about 2 hours of cleaning/ plotting..
debating whether is possible to get back on its wheels using the supplied bottle jack
tried, failed
walk back to town, about 12 hours
girlfriend drops what shes doing, drives 7 hours to come rescue
we get a hotel and relax, lifeless legs dead knees
with a wifi connection the sos goes out- overland bound, SCORR - socal off road recovery
8-18
Next morning people call from all over
2 are in town by 4pm
Quick stop at the market, air down, hit the trail
Arriving after sunset we decide to wait for first light
8-19
3rd arrives at 2am, 300 miles from home
Wake up, share a pot of tea, get to work
Position 2 vehicles, one taking my obstacle in reverse getting into position (front and rear locked crawl box on 35's)
cables come out
high ground - over the top gripping the driver A pillar - first flip, stabilizer
lower - uphill tow
10 hands heave, 4 wheels back down
Hood opens, maintainance check:
battery and fuel evap canister dented, battery blood drips on belts and generator
power steering leaking from lid
no oil in plugs, no fuel leaking
after a few stuttering attemps, starting fuse is found blown- replaced - ignition successful
winching begins
rocks, ledges, and a the rear driver tire off the wheel dont make things easy (yep, popped back on and rolled.. #toyo)
high point cable prevents further rolling as we climb.. slowly
we now get a visitor, dirtbike just came by to see whats up, hang out
final few pulls and its back on the trail
high lift at 20deg to counter trail camber helps put on the spare
3 toyotas drive back to camp, gather everything and clean up
4 drive back to town
3 bastards dont take any kind of payment, only say 'pay it forward' or 'we're a community' or some shit blah blah
after coming from distances up to 300 miles, wouldnt even let me get gas
1 mentions
" hey, report it to your insurance, its a forest rd. marked on the map. you never know.." - very smart
car goes to a storage facility in town, lots of funny looks as i drive the main strip
something in my teeth?
back to work, life
call Progressive and report, they pay
8-22
keep or sell? - keep
craigslist for 3 weeks
donor body found in reno - 700, plus 500 tow gets it to oakland
500 to transport the OG home
using a forklift bodies get swapped along with a few upgrades, 3 days work
scraps sold/ donated
now its back to the smog ref to start the process yet again(3.4 swap'd)... hoping i can pay it forward
Id really like to thank everyone, and the overland bound community for making this recovery possible. Can not express the gratitude
Not sure if im taking away the correct message but..
roll your car, get paid, buy toys, rebuild?
