Hi all,
I am sure that all of us have at some point or another helped out someone on the trail or even on the street whether its with helping out a novice driver up a hard trail or recovering a properly stuck rig.

I was wondering how many people know of, or are apart of, off-road recovery groups. It seems that often times people will head out on trail with a brand new rig, little experience, a heavy right foot and end up getting stuck or breaking down. While most of these people are able to get a friend to come and pick them up, often times they just aren't prepared or equip to recover their vehicle, which is where an off-road vehicle recovery group comes in.

Most of the groups I have seen are usually good Sumerians who are going out for free, or a small fee to cover gas and consumables, to recover and help stuck vehicles in a safe and professional manner, helping keep the trails free, people safe, and help with the good name of the offroading/overlanding community.

Here are just a few cars that were abandoned that I found on my latest trip, the trails leading in were snowed over and had large puddles/small ponds that were frozen over and had to be crossed/plowed through

I've heard of these groups but don't know of one near me. Recovery around here might be driving people home after a night at the bar! :yum:

Did you recover these guys in the pictures? Looks like they were abandoned! At some point, they become parts donors.

Many times those that are recovered are thankful and offer money. Many other times they are not and have no appreciation for volunteers donating their time, equipment, etc. to come save them. Treat with caution if you join a group.

One said group had a person ask for assistance in Phoenix. Folks thought they were stranded on the highway (well no real need for assistance for that but) No their broken vehicle was in their driveway and just didn't want to pay for a tow. After that a bunch of rules and waivers were put in place.

By all means while on a trail help them if you can. That may mean simply contacting the right people vs putting yourself at risk. That's why I like my Delorme InReach.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to recover any of these because they were indeed abandoned, I came back the next day and still no avail. In the past I have helped out a high centered Jeep (brand new, full factory options, driver was brand new to driving, boy was he embarrassed about being towed by me) and a Camero that was heading to out local hot springs
