I've used my rear receiver winch mount to get my self out of a potential roll over at an offroad park here in florida.
One other item I like to use a an anchor, when no tree's or other items are available.

I am looking at a new rear bumper for my Ford Excursion that can come winch equipped, or not. Just wondering if, while out on the trail, a rear winch is something that people use in self recovery that often? Or possibly, do people wish they had a winch on their rear bumper to assist with self recovery that one time it got a lil' hairy:screamcat:. The ol' Excursion does not have a lot of manufacturers willing to make rear bumpers for her at all, but this one company does and they seem to offer a ton of lighting options as well as the winch option. Looking forward to your input. Thanks in advance.
I was out with a friend this weekend and his winch was on the front and I didn't have one. I was behind him when he got stuck in a large water filled hole, his winch under water. If he'd had a rear mounted winch it would have been easier to pull him out.

Older thread, I know but wanting to see bumpers pics. To me the winch cradle is okay on a work truck or something but when off-roading how any times have you dragged a hitch or front bumper? If the hitch is buried in dirt or mud your not going to get the winch in the receiver, not without extensive digging anyway and if hung up on rocks...

And if you ride with it in the receiver you drastically reduce approach or departure angles. As far as a rear winch, may never use it but you'd be glad to have it if you need it.

Yeah the license plate just pops out of the fair lead and the wireless winch controls allow winch use from a safe distance, or from the driver's seat. I went with the Smittybilt X20 (10,000 lb)winch with synthetic rope. These guys at HNC do a great job and make a quality product.
