Ratchet Straps Damaging Cargo

How do you guys avoid this?

My ratchet straps chewed into my ice chest pretty good. It feels wrong to tighten them directly against the cargo.

You can throw a heavy towel or moving blanket over it.

Keep an eye out for the strap corners on the side of the road. It is a piece of durable plastic bent in a 90 with a pair if small ridges to keep the strap centered. Big rigs use them to secure things like lumber deliveries with hard edges on open flat beds without damaging their straps or the cargo.
