Since moving on from my beloved Toyota T-100 pickup, I've been slowly building up a 2004 BH Outback as the ultimate exploration dadwagon. He arrived with the name "Simon the Squeaking Subaru" and it's staying.
I won't go into detail, but I've upgraded the brakes, suspension, lighting, tires and built a custom luddite sound system whenever I could squeeze in a free moment to tinker between work, starting an independent home inspection business, and raising two daughters, it's been about a year to do basically a long weekend's work.
Anyway, this isn't a build thread, but I finally- *finally* got to take this little guy out for a proper shakedown.
I headed up through Napa into Monticello, then headed east towards Lake Berryessa and then north into the Knoxville-Berryessa OHV area.
I used to go here in my twenties when I had just gotten my T-100 and look for some of the area's mining history.
It's different not having that same amount of clearance and living space, but it was a ton of fun poking around out there.
Got a lot of weird-confused looks from the folks in trucks out on the trail, but I didn't have any issues with traction. Clearance is definitely something for me to consider in the future, though.
Here's a crappy video that I'd made of the trip. The video was more or less a total afterthought, so I didn't catch much of the actual exploration, but it was a fun outing and I can't wait to do it again.
