The longer you have your truck the more you tend to look at ways to use space better, my ram has a limited area under the back seat and I started adding some recovery gear that I found was taking up too much space. So i found a better unused space to use- with a little work.
Most trucks have a type of access panel to get at the latch mechanism- I started with just looking at the opening, my ram actually has a shelf that runs through the middle of the tailgate making a good space for straps, or other soft items -
just need to make access easier.
With a little trimming of metal that was not connected to any mounting holes there’s enough room to get 20’ straps, a tree strap, and some rope. Need to just make sure your not going to get anything tied up in the rods for latches or the mechanism. I added some Home Depot hinges and some motor cycle body panel 1/4 turn latches. Other than the ugly hinges it’s hard to notice it. It’s not a huge space but it gets non essential stuff out of the cab, also I was going to do a spray in bed liner so I did not mind a little primmer.
Depending on how yours Is laid out you may have more options- there’s lots of space around the beds of full size trucks that is wasted, start poking around.
