So I thought I would see if any of you have an actual informed answer about this. I have seen a million conflicting views on powder coating wheels online, apparently it can weaken the wheels?

I got a set of wheels from a 2014 Tundra TRD, I want to get them powder coated black to look like the TRD Pro wheels. Anyone have any info on this? I would love to finally get a definitive answer I can trust, rather than relying on Internet heresay. Thanks in advance for the help!

In what way does it weaken the wheels? Its a coating.... unless I'm completely missing something.

Here for the answer.

Hmm I see what your saying after a quick google. Are you 100% against painting them? It appears that if you go to a powder coat place that knows metal and knows what they are doing then its not an issue.

I think you could get a real answer from someone that knows and works with aluminum. They will know what temps will cause an issue for the metal.

I can't speak about the technicalities, would be interested to hear what others say too but, I had it done by a company here in the UK (they advertise their service specifically for wheels though) and I've had no issues. Now 3 years since I had them done. On a plus point the coating has lasted much longer than when I used to get them painted/lacquered.

They only heat the wheels up to 450° at the most to melt the powder.
It takes a lot more heat to change any part of the metals structure.

Thanks Michael! I have seen a ton of crap online about it and wanted to make sure before I went and did something potentially stupid.
