Pathfinder I
So, I finally had a few days without work.... And it corresponded with my kid's spring break. So... I packed up the Jeep and drove to South Carolina. Where I met my buddy Nathan. From Atlantic, NC, we headed to Morris Marina where we took the ferry over to the island. The ferry is run by Portsmouth Island Fishing. Great family operated shop. Took the small ferry over to the island. Once on the island we had to check in with the NPS and get a permit from them. Then we were free to roam the island. All 22 miles of it. There were very very few people on the island and it was great. We only saw a hand full of people the whole time we were on the island and never any once we set up camp.
So, enjoy the pics and vid...
The ferry ride over was interesting... Small ferry
The second place we headed on the island (first being the NPS shack) was to the Abandoned settlement of Portsmouth. Very cool place... Some deep water to get there though. You will notice that the water was not moving. I would never cross that much water if it were moving...
As you could see... It was a bit deep...Next up after we returned across that water was to find our first camping spot... We couldn't setup in or behind the dunes so we needed to find a good spot above the high tide line... Easier said than done...
You will notice that Nathan's Jeep ended up touching the Atlantic at high tide...
Next of course was dinner... By this time both the kids were starving or so they told me.
Fairly happy with the gallery. I felt like everything worked the way I planned it to this time.
And of course the Trail Jambalaya is always a hit with the kids. On a plus side, it's very healthy as well.
We woke in the morning to a beautiful sunrise... Not all of us woke up in time for that of course.
Once we packed up it was time to head to the other end of the island. And try to catch low tide to cross the tidal flats to get to the end of the island...
After exploring the time of the island and searching through the many large seashells, we had to find another camp spot... Again, trying out best to judge where high tide was going to reach without going into the dunes to do so.
We found the perfect spot that overlooked the Tidal Flats/bird sanctuary...
A perfect place indeed...
And of course sunrise the next morning!!!
As you can see this was a beautiful little island to escape to even if it was only for a few days...
