Most of the time the places we stay have a fire ring we can use. Occasionally though a porta-pit (NOT to be confused with a porta-potti :-) can be useful (i.e. desert environments, high fire risk, etc).
I had three main criteria for a fire pit. It had to be compact to fit between my other gear. It had to be durable (so many seem like single use jobs) and it had to be affordable).
I finally ended up with a Primus Komodo and while not used often, it seems to fit the bill.
