I'm in need of a new rig and will be ordering a 2022 2500 Power Wagon. I am interested in your experience in ordering a truck at this time and in this market. I've talked to a local dealer and he explained the process to me, which is roughly:

1. Build/order vehicle
2. Price will not include any current pricing programs (programs= current incentives, ex: $1500 cash back, 0%apr, etc, etc)
3. Once VIN is generated a deposit is placed which is a percentage of the vehicle cost
4. Vehicle is built
5. Vehicle is delivered, and final price is determined based on pricing programs at time of delivery
6. Vehicle is purchased/financed.

I have a couple questions:

1. Was this your general process as well? Any difference?
2. Did the dealer try to increase the vehicle cost above and beyond msrp? If so , how much?

My concern is that since the vehicle is scarce the dealer may take advantage of that and jack up the price.
Also any tips/advice on ordering a vhehicle you could offer would be appreciated.

If you do some Google searching on the make/model you are looking for along with the words "fleet order" and your state you should get some hits on customer experiences with doing that in your state usually from a message board related to that vehicle. That's how I came across the process to buy my Jeep last year. Usually you will be able to get the vehicle for a set percentage less than invoice or MSRP from that particular dealer and then the process is to just identify the options you want and then they will put together a build sheet with an agreed to price (and deposits if any). I had received my Jeep at 5% less than invoice cost. The fleet sales manager I used relies on good word of mouth from the various web forums and had a volume of about 20 or so of these types of referred purchases each month in addition to his normal traffic. This was they way at least things worked prior to the pandemic as I placed my order in January 2020.

After the mess a friend went through , I went to our Credit Union and ordered it through them , they found the closest matches and let me see which fit my requests...they even brought them to the office to see if I was happy with any of them...

I don’t know about Power Wagons but I bought a new 4Runner and travelled 3hrs to a dealer that wasn’t marking up vehicles. Saved me about $16k because of what local dealers were marking up used inventory and the 1 or 2 they had available coming in early 2022. So I would recommend shopping around to different dealers in your state if possible. There’s good business people out there doing the right thing and not trying to gouge customers because of current inventory.

And if you do have a trade in it helps, a lot.

Best of luck!

Back in May I ordered a 2022 f250 Tremor. I found a dealership that would honor my "x-plan" request (being a member of certain organizations help get me pricing just over invoice). at the ford dealership they required a deposit ( in my case they said at least $500) to order the truck, which was fully refundable. when I ordered the truck, I made sure I had it in writing that they would honor the pricing of the truck when ordered. I then waited until it got delivered and then paid for the rest of the truck.

I would say to make sure when you place your order at the dealership you have the agreed upon price in a written contract or something. that way they cant pull some shady stuff and upcharge you when its finally delivered
