I am in this State Park almost every week mountain biking. Typically on the weekend or more often in the evening doing a ngiht ride. This park is very close to urban areas, and just a few miles from the Ventura freeway, which is major throughfare between L.A. and Ventura Santa Barabra. This park is really easy to get to by anyone, including the homeless. The park has good bathrooms and running water. This is the only campsite in the park. In the past I was a volunteer for over 10 years here and other close by State and National Parks. This park suffers from too many people, trash and graffiti. Additionally just down the road from here is a large county run youth detention center. There is a trail close to this center that goes right into the campsite. Not a long hike. The homeless situation in this general area is a problem, although I have never known it to affect this park.
It is very easy to disappear from this campsite without being noticed. At the time of the shooting it was dark out, with a half moon, which would have made enough light to get around easy. I think this crime may have been commited by a homeless person, who walked by and shot into the tent, or a gang banger. Lastly the LEO rangers at this park are few and far between. I might also mention the Malibu Serieffs station, which is close by, is one of the worst and in my book one of the most useless. They have a very bad reputation with all the cyclist in the area, and whenever I have made contact with them, they have been worthless. My point here, is it easy to commit crimes at the park that no one wants to deal with. It now appears there have been serveral recent shooting here, without any followup or increase in law enforcement.
