Overwatering? Is that a thing?

Living near the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta (700 miles of waterways), I can't get out of my head, the idea of exploring it "Overlanding" style. Obviously, you need a boat.

I was looking for something I could:
Carry on my 5'x10' Utility trailer.
Afford to purchase.
Afford to operate.
Carry at least 4 people.
Sleep on board.
Carry plenty of cargo.
Have shade.
Keep out mosquitos :-)

Then I saw this...


Using Speed-Rail, Scaffolding Planks, and a Pop-Up Awning, you could have a 10'x10' platform on a two canoe catamaran, and the whole thing could be broken down to fit on a 5'x10' utility trailer, AND be stored in the garage.

Two 17' canoes have a load capacity of over 2,600 pounds!...

Add a small outboard...

... and you're ready for adventure!

Brand new, I could set it up for around $5k.
Used,... half that!

Believe me, I've considered a pontoon boat. Here's what made me want to go another direction: Needs a trailer/license that serves only one purpose. Cannot store at my house (so I'd need to pay storage). Much heavier, and needs bigger motor. Also, this way means I have two canoes, that I can use individually. I could even put one on top of the Jeep when doing Overland trips.

Why not do it Aussie style and get an aluminum boat with a small detachable outboard?

The Aussies call them Tinnies and they often have wheels on the stern gunwhale to move them around and a detachable outboard motor. One person can get them on and off the roof of a vehicle because they are so light.

I love those, but a 10'x10' platform give you so many option. You can even sleep on board.

I've lived in apartments smaller than 10'x10' ;-) You could set up a fridge, solar panels, kitchen,... Red Neck Houseboat!!!

I couldn't really find a better picture to get the idea across - but I have considered something like this. I think it would be cool to put a small(ish) rigid hull inflatable boat on a roof rack. The idea of having no boundaries really takes on meaning then - run up to a lake or huge river -- no worries! -- drop the boat, load it up from the truck and go for it!!

Of course, the Aussies even have a name for it..."Roof Top Tinnie," although that has to do with a metal boat -- but fun article and cool description of putting the boat on the roof!!
