Overlanding Frequency?

Just a quick question...

I don't have my license yet....but have heard from a few guys that they still use VHF while out on trails and that there are frequencies that are acceptable to use in those situations. Is that true? If so, what frequencies are people using?

Just want to make sure we're not pissing people off...

The official Overland Bound Frequency is 146.460
Other acceptable frequencies are 146.520 which is the national calling frequency.

Other Common Off-Road VHF Frequencies:

4WD1 146.430
4WD2 146.490
4WD3 146.580
4WD4 147.420
4WD5 147.450
4WD6 147.480
4WD7 147.540
4WD8 147.570

These are all suggestions and any frequency that is not in use can be used by a person holding the correct license.

if you are making people mad, it’s probably because you are running on a frequency that requires a license.

Correct me if I am wrong but you are asking about VHF frequencies that can be used without a license?

If so, MURS is the only legal option and there are only 5 channels and handheld only.

But I am going to guess that your guys aren't using MURS but instead are using "race radios" and/or "offf road frequencies" which don't exist. They are business band frequencies that are licensed to many companies but since they are used by race teams a particular company has advertised them as being open to off roaders or that off roaders are covered under their license.

The big thing is not using frequencies commercial, resource companies use.

This are correct with a major caveat: You must use an FCC type accepted MURS radio. Just punching these freqs into a baofeng and talking is technically against FCC rules and they will enforce the rules if you are making yourself known.
