I'm going to be in the market for a new overland rig in the coming year. I wanted to reach out to the community and see what recommendations all of you would have regarding a good starting vehicle.

Conditions:

1. Truck (probably used) - I want a truck platform, preferably mid-size (due to it being a daily driver), but I have no qualms with going to a full size
2. Comfortable seating for big and tall driver/passenger (I'm 6'3 and 450'ish lbs)
3. My M-F commute is roughly 150 highway miles (round trip) so decent fuel mileage would be good
4. Parking at the office is fairly tight, and the overhead is 6'8" if I have to use one of the local parking garages (although there are plenty of non-parking garage areas within .75 miles of my office that I could walk from)
5. Upper Midwest region (Northern Illinois/Southern Wisconsin) so on average I can expect some 6-12" snowfalls during the winter commute

Personal Thoughts:

I've been thinking about a modular tray system. That way I could mount different items for different needs. This is just a thought that has been swimming around in my head, by no means is it set in stone for the final build.

I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on what platform you'd recommend for this project.

Thanks!

If I had to start over, I'd look at a Tacoma. So many aftermarket gear and accessories. I think it checks the box on all your requirements.

Seriously. If you want a truck and prefer a mid-size, you dont go wrong with Tacoma. Colorado seems to offer lot, too, depending on trim level. The new Ranger seems cool, just not enough longevity yet for me.

If full size is your thing, the GMC is very comfortable

misprint?? cuz no mid size will fit 450#
75 mile commute.... daily..... you need a Prius.
The overlander should be a second, garaged, dedicated overland vehicle.
I totally agree. However, the reality is that I can't afford a dedicated overland vehicle. So it has to do double duty as my work vehicle.

The Colorado and Nissan Frontier (along with the 1st Gen Nissan Titan) have been my front runners for searches. I don't need the ZR2 trim, nor do I need the Pro-4X on the Nissan. Some Light trailer towing (under 5000lbs) would be good.
