Hello all,

Timeline: Migration beginning of April.

Many have noted site instability over the last few months. We are taking steps to update our software platform for long-term stability. For the unindoctrinated, software and dependencies need to be updated on a regular basis, or things start to fail. It is always a balance of maintaining members experience consistency on the site, and upgrading, but it has to be done - or the site fails in an unrecoverable way. Clearly we cannot have that.

With the OLB software platform, much of our web code goes back to 2015 (thank you if you were here at that time *ehem* @Lifestyle Overland ). This forum software is many years old. In order set up our community for years to come, it is time we do a fairly major upgrade to the web forums and site. Here's the rub. Though this is an upgrade and there will be improvements, some key features you may use will go away, at least for a while. What to expect:

Overland Bound has what we call a Marketing website. It is the home page, registration, articles, software and membership information. It keeps the lights on. Though integrated, it is completely separate from the OB1 Platform website, which provides the forums, Rally Point, and the web Member Map. We are migrating the platform website to AWS, and upgrading all forum and ob1 software, including stack dependencies, to the latest versions.

The Good:
  • Stability
  • Forum software upgrades (we are not migrating to new forum software, just updating) and many "modern convenience" quality of life improvements.
  • Scalable and less subject to single point of failure internet interruptions.
  • Responsiveness.
  • Updated forum themes.
  • Set us up for future major software upgrades.
The Not-So-Good:
  • There will be a period of minor fixes and tweaks though we will try to catch as much before rollout as possible.
  • Rally Point on the web will go away (at least for a while). For this functionality, use the OB1 app.
  • The Member Map on the web will go away (at least for a while). For this feature, use the OB1 app.
The Future:

This major upgrade sets us up for future features upgrades and new features for both the web experience and the OB1 app without a dependency on WordPress (current platform dependency).

From a Member perspective it's a mixed bag, but it is an essential update, puts spring in my step, and sets us up for a long future with Overland Bound.

Thank you,

Michael
