Well, ended up being just me and one other person from the offroad club. It was a fun day. Lots of ups and downs. Was raining hard when we got there and we headed straight for the mud pit. It was more like a water pit. Immediately upon arriving, I got stuck with water up to the driver's door. Tried freeing myself several times, turns out I was caught on a log or downed tree in the middle of the mud pit. A group of quads and some XJs rolled by and gave a hand. Played around at the pit and started exploring other parts of the park, almost made it to the top of Rock Trail, but my all terrains were too caked up on the soft uphill mud and I just slid back and forth rather than up the hill. We backed down and went to another part of the park and did numerous creek crossings and mud holes. Then back to the mud pit. When we were done, we parked in one of the lots and for some reason my H3 wouldn't crank anymore. Battery was still good as all the lights and radio worked. Once in a while it would crank but engine wouldn't stay running. Water/mud must have gotten somewhere it shouldn't. Then my friend's TJ decided that her battery should die. We were two dead vehicles at that point. She got a jump and started up, but couldn't keep a charge. We assumed it was the alternator. Started her TJ again and drove out to where we had signal, had dinner and called a tow truck. We learned her TJ had a bad negative battery connection. Went back and suddenly the H3 cranked and was running. Drove half way to the highway (8 miles) and suddenly lost power. Luckily tow truck arrived and we were on our way home. Upon getting back, H3 started and I drove it into the backyard.

There is something in the mud at Frank Raines. I was out there with a group of Land Rovers earlier this year and 2 of them died on the way home because they played in the mud pit too. Both had to replace their alternators.

I hope mine ain't the alternator. I redid the battery terminals and they aren't the problem. narrows it to the starter solenoid, alternator or GM Passlock. Still trying to figure it out.

Did you get any water over the hood during the crossings? Was it idling rough at any point or the check engine light come on? I got water under my coil packs which was causing spark failure.

I had the pass lock failure on mine a few years ago. Water from the sunroof wasn't draining properly and dripped on the body control module in the passenger dash. Seems like a common issue with the h3s with those going bad and preventing the vehicle from starting. If I remember correctly, if it enters the pass lock, you have to wait 10 minutes before retrying to start the vehicle.

The water crossings were shallow. The mud pit was very runny. Not thick mud, more like water than mud and it does goes over your hood, splashes over. But I didn't experience any idling. Everything was fine until we're about to leave, parked our rigs and cleaned up a little. That's when it didn't want to start up.

Have you checked your passenger tail light? The running light will still work but the turn signal and brake light don't activate if it is the body control module. This is a symptom as well as the faulty pass lock.

I actually haven't checked it. Will have to do that soon. Changed the starter today.....turns out it wasn't the starter, it was the starter relay. Had to order it, will have it a day or two
