OLD COAST ROAD, BIG SUR

hello!!

a few of us are planning this road trip to moab, route 66 and the coast still and wondered about the old coast road just south of big sur. anyone been on this?...looking forward, but wondered if anything i should know so i don't drive onto private property or if any gates might be present. it seems like the route has many branches all over the hills.

The road is marked well to stop wandering onto private property by those who use it-vehicles, bicyclists and hikers. The area has become quite popular since social media but in the yesteryears served as the stage coach Rd before bixby bridge. The surrounding area is beautiful and there are plenty of picture taking opportunities. Check out the Big Sur River Inn for a cooked lunch or pick up sandos at Bruno's deli in Carmel before heading south.

Love that drive through trees bixby bridge and hwy 1 so scenic. The road itself can be done in 2 wheel drive. I seen a Prius, mini van and a Dodge Magnum while driving through...Lol

Yep. Overlanding is not for Hawaii. You can travel around the island of Oahu in one day. Coming from the south I'd enter at Los Burros and take the Coast Ridge Trail Plaskett Ridge Trail etc to Naciemento then down to HWY 1 and over to Andrew Molera to link up with Old Coast. Grab the National Geographic map of Big Sur for details. Also HWY 1 closed now so beware

i did try to make it around when the road comes to the end before the point at manini pali...lotsa fishing there...some told me the red dirt would be a problem for the jeep rental if i continued onto honolulu and it also heads into a rough part of town as i was told. i know that this section from the north end of the island to honolulu is very unstable and its hard to build any sort of highway through.

I would call the ranger before hand and see if they are open. They often close it if it gets too muddy and with all this rain and recent mudslides, I'd be surprised if they were open
