OE West road trip - Wickenberg AZ question

I’m leaving San Diego 9/23 afternoon for OE West. I’m thinking about pausing for the evening in Wickensberg. I’ll be with my son and we’ll sleep in my truck camper (AT Habitat). Does anybody know that area well enough to recommend a place to disperse camp? We’ll probably arrive in the dark, so nothing too complex pls, thanks all.

OE West is in Flagstaff, right? Assuming you're taking I-8 > I-17, you could consider camping out near Crown King instead. Lots of camping on the first part of the road (59) up there (e.g., around Bumble Bee) and then again up near Crown King itself (if you want/need to go higher to escape the heat). Probably ~7 hours from San Diego.

Thx for the reply. Yes, OE West is in Flagstaff. Crown King is probably further than I can get first day but I’ll check it out. I appreciate the suggestion.

There were fires in that area. You might want to confirm what is open.

It would be a little out of the way but also a little further west. You might go to Swansea Ghost Town. It would take about an hour off of I-10, best guess, but you can then take the backway to Wickenburg and up to Flagstaff.
