For emergencies, a SAT phone might be your best bet. It’s a drop in the bucket compared to what you’re already spending but I think you can just rent them as well. If you’re going to be in Canada, you may want to start a little further north and see Alaska. You would most certainly want to start in late summer.

I am guessing far less sand and way more boulders on this trip than Australia. Sliders and skid plates are a good idea if you don’t already have them. You might also want some of those pants with the expandable waste if you plan on eating out much. We are a bunch of fatties here.

I hope it is ok to post this but you might want to google “the road chose me” and check out his Pan America Highway Expedition.

Sounds like an awesome, albeit massive, undertaking.

The paperwork involved must be staggering.

Best of luck and have fun with it. We Americans aren't as bad as the media makes us look.......
hah yeah on out news they make America look really bad, but had mates go to America and they say its one of the best places and everyone they met were great people and seemed to love Australia for some reason

cheers mate very helpful, will look into a sat phone, do you guys have some sort of EPERB like in Aus we use a SPOT, and as soon as you activate it it will alert emergency services,

and we will have to look into Alaska also, guess if were going to do it we better do it all.

Here’s a three-week trip, but in opposite order, country-wise...

One thing to keep in mind since you have a year, many of the places are different experiences depending on the season. Yosemite seems like four different parks, depending on the season. Alaska & the Canadian Rockies should be experienced in at least two different seasons as well. You may also want to consider the trans america trail, though there are parts that are impossible for 4 wheels.
Looking forward to see your travel blog...

Will you be keeping to the west coast on your way south, or will you make it to the east coast as well?

With a year to travel, it would be a shame if they didn’t hit both coasts and the middle....

Here is just a rough idea of a path to follow. Start in Alaska, head south into Canada and then East. Cross over into the US at Niagara Falls. Head south down the coast to Florida. Zig zag back up to Chicago and follow(roughly) Route 66 over and down to California. You can head south into Mexico from there or take Highway one north to see the west coast. Then you could hit the Pan American Highway and take that as far South as you dare go.

To kind of echo Persquank, you could ship your car to Alaska and work your way down. Driving up here and back down wouldn't be a bad choice and you can certainly switch it up a bit, but it's an idea.
