Hey all, I’ve had an user ID for 3 years but just got OB membership. Recently picked up 2021 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road. Off-roading to this point has consisted of farm driving and getting into hunting spots. Tacoma is still pretty much stock so hope to build it’s capabilities over time and I need to keep it as a good daily driver. Couple quick questions: 1) Want to get some basics protection on the truck so what would you guys recommend for Rock Sliders - I’m considering the Rocky Road Outfitters their Kicker Full Cover sliders. 2) I’m out of Columbus OH - what are some good beginner trails for me to hit in Ohio or bordering states? Thanks in advance for your help and looking forward to being part of Overland Bound!

Welcome from CA. I have only once wish I had had sliders, they look cool but if you take your time you might not ever need them. That being said I drive in the desert, I don’t crawl the truck. I have done a spontaneous body mods just not there. I do have under armor and done some damage on them. The center and east side of the country are very different.

Before sliders I would worry about underbody skids , dents suck but a hole in a oil pan or trans pan will stop a trip real quick .

MMc, thanks for the welcome and your response! Makes sense. I will look into some under armor. One reason I may still look into sliders is entry into the Taco. It is about the only thing I don’t like about it. Thanks again!

Thanks for your reply! Good call and appreciate that input from you and MMc. Will start looking to piece together my under armor and just be careful with the rockers for a while. I’m wanting to start on some relatively tame stuff to start off anyway.

The armor/skid plates/bash plates also wont likely void any warranty like a lift kit might. So, armor, possibly just larger tires, but not so large that they reduce articulation by too much, might raise you half inch to an inch while also hardening the underside. I've heard that Tacoma is a great platform

You can add steps there a couple different styles or go to your fab guy and have him make you up some.

Welcome! Just fill up the truck with gas and go out and explore. You can use APPs like Gaia to find trails. Any State Park nearby will do really. Starts out easy, and go from there.

You will find out that the stock Tacoma OR is quite capable. Learn what your truck can, and can't do. And more importantly, learn your own limit as well.

Once you have a good understanding of the terrain you like to explore in, the limit of your own capability, and the truck's ability, you'll have a better grasp of what you want to upgrade.

Good luck and happy exploring

Thanks OnlyTaco! Great call. It is too easy to jump into what cool mods I “need”(want) vs just getting out and figuring it our from experience. I’ve seen guys do incredible stuff with stock Tacos and the OR is a great base platform to start from. I will get out, build some experience and go from there. Thanks!
