New to overlanding

Hey guys, name is Hunter. From Oklahoma with a wife and 5mo son. Looking to get into the overlanding scene and explore our great state, and other destinations. After my son was born (surprise pregnancy btw lol), I've had a different outlook on life and am truly starting to appreciate this great planet we call home. I want to give my son the experiences I never had as a kid/young adult. Anyways, little bit about my truck. I've got a 2018 F150 FX4. Before my son was born, I was big into the show truck style with big lift, big wheels and tires. Once he was born I changed up the style to be more rugged and offroad'y look. I've got so much time and money invested into my F150, I don't want to abuse it too much. So I'm currently looking to get into a first gen Sequoia and use that as a main overlanding rig. Excited to start exploring and see what this forum has to offer. Been navigating through the forums and seeing what everyone does and this place has a lot to offer.

Also, here are some before and after pics of my truck.
My truck is an 18 F150 FX4
-6" Superlift
-6" Rough Country Vertex lift struts in front with Bilstein 5100's in the rear
-18" Method wheels
-35" Nitto Recon Grapplers
-20" Amazon special lightbar in bumper
-Diode Dynamic SS3 ditch lights w/ Diode Dynamic mounts (not pictured)
-Horn Blasters horns with the spare tire delete kit

@hstraw, Welcome to Overland Bound! New tires and wheels really fit that truck, very nice.

@hstraw Both configurations look great, but un-delete that spare tire ASAP and get a matching spare!

Nice tire choice, just keep 'em rotated - Nitto deep treads don't wear amazingly well, in my experience. I run them hard though.

Toyota Sequoia is a good pick for a big rig, but I would honestly recommend some thing smaller, for a group of just 3. Unless you're bringing friends and/or pets often, the larger dimensions might become more of a setback than an advantage.

Only you know what you need, though, and the Sequoia is a really solid platform.

I had an 04 Tundra and loved it, but that's been a few vehicles ago. Now that I'm wanting to get into overlanding, I've been seeing the older Toyota's are great vehicles to run, and since I have a family now and am familiar with the Tundra, that's why I chose to look at Sequoia's. Essentially a Tundra but in SUV form.

You will find everything in overlanding is a tradeoff. I drove and wheeled small trucks for a while, I got tired of fixing them, so I don't wheel anymore. I have been a outdoorsman all my life, my current rig is a 2500, 8 ft bed truck that works for me now. I got tried of camping small, now I can carry all my toys and gear camp very comfortably. As you do more you'll figure out what suits you and yours, the Sequoia is a good place to start, before doing you mods get camping gear and make sure you and the family like the life style.

Thanks for the tip. For now we don't really plan on doing any camping type of overlanding. Just day trips for the most part. My plan is to have a rack on top with lighting and then an awning that we can sit under and just hang out. But more so just day trips to start off. And then we'll accommodate to what we find we like to do. It's been pretty cold here in Oklahoma lately so we haven't been able to do many things.

Hello Hunter. Welcome to the OB community. Great looking truck and I can understand that you don't want to mess it up overlanding. Keep checking out those forums and maybe consider joining at some point.

I really enjoy my train horns so they'll stay put, but yes I agree, I need to get a spare tire. As of right now I don't have a matching spare.
