We've been overall pretty happy with OsmAnd with iOverlander data imported for wherever we're going. I wrote a data converter for this and it has worked now surprisingly well for a few trips, including two months in Canada/Alaska:

The green tent symbols are for the various types of camp spots (wild camping, normal campspot, campground, ...). This was super helpful for us when traveling.

My experiences pretty much mimic yours.
My latest experiment was to recently purchase the Garmin Overlander which has iOverlander integrated in it so it can be used offline. I’m planning an extended trip to Utah and Nevada in a month or so and hopefully I’ll work out any issues. I’m also going to Africa later this year and will be getting maps from Tracks4Africa which are compatible with the Overlander. Wish me luck!

PS are you on the Jeep Gladiator forum too?
Just an update to my thread above.

I have now used the Garmin Overlander on the two trips I mentioned above and could not be more pleased. Even in Algeria where I was working with “Tracks for Africa” in marking out unexplored areas of this unique country I was able to track our progress and map new routes in previously unexplored areas that were unavailable to “tourists” until very recently. In the US, having iOverlander incorporated into the system allowed us to find places to boondock relatively easily.
