New Motor

Hey guys just want your thoughts. A good friend of mine might sell me his 1988 22re motor. I have a 22r motor now his has 190xxx on his but it fuel injected mines not. He will sell it to me for $500. And I've helped him on it. Is it a good deal? I will be getting the computer and all the wiring to. Let me know what u guys think. :)

Thats a great deal on an engine! Especially a 22RE that you know the history of. There are many ways to make it "feel" better(like adjusting the valves to a 7-11 instead of the factory 8-12;keeps it a little quieter as well as upping maintenance intervals) and perform better. I highly suggest looking into an LC Engineering header and down pipe. They not only perform better but also sound better. Another good idea is port matching the intake and exhaust. These are all things that can be done with simple tools and are beneficial while the engine is out of the truck. Good Luck and may the force be with you.

Thanks man. I haven't really done any motor work besides change gaskets, sparkplug and oil Change and distributor. But I'll look into it thanks for the support

Definitely worth the upgrade, although you didn't mention your mileage, EFI is always better. Your's is an '86? I thought those all came with EFI..., but maybe not until '87.
@Anders0nic nailed all the key and simple upgrades, depending on your budget and wishes for power, you are the boss!

Let us know how it goes, that 22R motor is super-solid and still sought after. You could probably sell the 22R that you take out for $500 for a net zero!

I really liked my 92 22RE, I would absolutely recommend the upgrade.

Mine is an 1986 4runner with a 84 motor. 85 they switched to EFI that's that the E stands for in 22RE

I .. just can't...

Fellas, I don't mean to be a rusty nail, but an engine is what you keep referring to. A motor is an electrical device.

An internal combustion engine creates heat which then converts to energy. An electrical motor converts electrical energy into mechanical motion. I know its a crusade that will earn me an outcast status, but please, lets use the proper terminology. It confuses less people and elevates the level of discussion.

Again, please don't think of this as a personal attack. I am just trying to lessen any potential confusion.

I suggest picking up a BGB(big Green Book). The BGB is the factory service manual. They can be found on eBay, amazon, owner forums, etc... Another fantastic resource can be youtube. There are many out there that publish how to/DIY videos for public consumption at no cost. Talk about being a good soul and paying it forward.

There are many resources available to you. If you can perform basic maintenance, you can adjust valves. I actually have my own collection of Factory Service Repair Manuals as I have owned soo many different Toyotas(especially trucks). Im here is you have questions.

Also a side note, your factory ignition will need to be swapped as well when you put the 22RE into the T4R as the 22R's don't have the same capacitative style ignition.
