We lived in the Bay Area for about a dozen years before we moved back here to AZ. There's a pretty decent guide book called "Guide To California Backroads & 4-Wheel-Drive Trails" that I recommend picking up. It has a number of routes and waypoints that cover the whole state, most of the routes include waypoints for campsites

I'm take my 2 boys 2 dogs and the wife on the lost coast trail Saturday August 1st returning Monday. Should be a great trip.
