Hello Everyone
New to forums in general also new to overlanding.
I did grow up with 4wheelers so i do have a little off road knowledge just not much with vehicles.
Rig: Stock 2004 Honda Pilot EX AWD

Looking forward to getting to know everyone and learning a few tips and tricks to make vehicle camping more adventurous
I have taken my Pilot out a few times but ground clearance prevents me from doing a lot with it.

Hello there! I used to live in Montgomery and have explored around Alabama a good bit. The National Forests in the state are a great treasure - be sure to check them out.

Thanks. I've been out to talladega a few times and tried to explore the trials out there when time permits. I have taken my pilot down 600-2 which was a little more than i should have done lol. The exhaust took a beating. I had a blast but my wife on the other hand was not due to scraping. I am looking to upgrade to a XJ or 4Runner soon.

I hope you have better luck than me shopping for a decent XJ for a reasonable price. About 6 years ago, I had the XJ bug and was looking for a '99-'01 - it seems like people realised their popularity and were trying to capitalise. I ended up getting a really nice condition '99 Mitsubishi Montero Sport GLX which I loved, for less than half the nicer XJs were advertised for. And, the Toyota Tax is real, too.

Point being, by all means, shop for and buy the vehicle you want, but don't be afraid to at least investigate less orthodox vehicles.

Once I started looking at the xj's and 4Runners I did find that they are higher price than I would like to spend on something I'm going to take in the woods. Recently I have been looking into other SUVs like the Xterra and the Pathfinder. I did see a couple of Montero sports. From what i have looked into them they don't look like a bad option. So far the only trouble im having is most of them I've found are 2WD

Yeah, the Montero Sport is a surprisingly capable vehicle bone-stock. Unfortunately, there isn't much of an aftermarket for off-road specific modifications, though.

An Xterra would be a good option - especially a late-model one. Another one to consider would be a late-model ('06+) GM GMT360 (Chevy Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Isuzu Ascender, et. al). Again, not a huge aftermarket, but can be found cheap and the LL8 straight six is strong and reliable.

Welcome! I grew up in Dothan and moved to Colorado from Montgomery in 2005. From Montgomery I used to wheel a lot in TN with a group out of Chattanooga.

If you're ever out this way, look me up!

@Bama_Kiwi , War Eagle! ;)

Just my reaction to the outcome of a certain recent football game. :)
Was that with LSU? I don't really follow football, but I think I saw something about it in my Facebook feed.

Yeah. In hindsight, it was a great game. Alabama caught a few unlucky breaks, which is hard to overcome when playing a team like LSU. Looking like it might be LSU's year if they can keep on their current trajectory. Alabama might be on the outside looking in this year if some Chaos doesn't occur.
