New guy from Texas!

Hey guys, new guy here from Plano, TX. I moved from San Diego to Plano about 3 years ago, and I am really missing the 4-wheeling that was abundant in Southern California. The DFW area is just terrible for 4-wheeling and especially overlanding/camping. I can't stand the designated spot camp grounds packed with strangers a few feet away, that's not how camping is supposed to be! For wheeling, it's seems you're pretty much stuck with pay-to-play OHV parks if you don't want to drive out of state. Not sure how much longer I'm sticking around Texas, the wife and I have been tossing around the idea of moving to Colorado. We'll see...

I've been building (and repairing... mostly repairing) my rig for a few years now. It's a 2006 Ford Ranger FX4. I originally wanted to do a crawler build, but lately I've geared the build more toward overlanding instead. The adventure aspect is much more intriguing, and my wife and I both love camping. I've wanted to do the Mojave trail for years, but it just never happened. I was never really prepared for a multi-day excursion, and trying to talk my friends into it turned out to be a difficult task (life always gets in the way...). It's still on my bucket list, and hopefully I'll be able to do it some day, or at least some similar adventures.

Anywho, I'm looking forward to meeting some other members and getting out on the trail.

PS, I'm taking a short trip back to San Diego for a few days, so if I don't respond to this thread over the next few days, I didn't disappear!

Yeah Plano certainly isn't a hot spot for off road but it is certainly a hot spot for Land Rovers or Range Rovers (I still don't know the difference) that have never been dirty much less been off road. The state parks are nice but yes you're right next to someone else and they're all paved. Before you leave the state make a trip to big bend state and national park. It's probably more like what you're used to where you have remote camping and plenty of unmarked roads you can travel on. It's a beautiful environment too.

Definitely. Big Bend is on my list of places to see before we leave. I also need to go tubing down the Guadalupe river!

I‘m new on OB as well. I‘ve been looking at doing Big Bend as well. Keep me in mind. I‘m from New Braunfels/Guadalupe River and live in Denton Tx now. I‘m not the best on the computer and i‘m trying to be more diligent in finding things going on in Texas. I‘m on the North Texas Jeep Club. Looks like there are some members on there looking to overland camp. A number of them with overlanding rigs. I“m going to try and line up a meet up and so everyone can meet and check out each other’s rigs.

Bobby, I just became a member too. I live next door to Plano. I love Texas (native here) but I agree on the lack of adventure available here in the north Texas area so my wife and I are actually moving to Colorado this summer.

Awesome. If I do end up planning a trip out to Big Bend I will definitely post it here. I'll be keeping an eye out for Texas meet ups. I haven't met a whole lot of people since we moved here, so it'll be nice to meet some people with similar interests.

Hey, new member myself. I live in Justin, right by Texas motor speedway. I'm looking for some little weekend trips. I want to go to big bend, but I want to do it right, so I'll plan for at least 4 or 5 days. I have minimal equipment and even more minimal experience, but I'm down.

4 or 5 days is a good amount of time to check things out. You don't really need a lot of experience for the national park. The roads are pretty mild. The state park is a bit more "primitive" and open for exploration and dispersed camping. Several folks on the forum have discussed the big bend area. They probably have more experience than I do. We spent 12 days out there last month and didn't get to see everything. Barely even made it to the state park. We spent alot of time hanging out in camp and so forth so we could certainly have seen more. Our next trip will focus on the state park. Get some pizza at the Long Draw pizza place in Terlingua. The building looks pretty sketchy but the ladies that run it are really nice. The pizza is awesome and Shiner Boch is very cold!

Welcome to OB from the Sierra Foothills Overlanders in CA. Look for a local meet-up in your area it will get you connected with some like minded people in the great state of Texas.

I too built towards overlanding because of my wife"s love of camping and exploring... but it turns out that she enjoys crawling too once she tried it... got us onto 2 wheels her first time driving...
