Just returned from a 4 day trip to the Needles area last weekend. Been there many times, starting as a young kid and it’s always been my favorite So. UT desert destination for many reasons. It’s just an epic, unique and special place no doubt. Though it is way busier than it used to be 10-20 years ago, it sill is a nice southeastern UT respite from the ridiculousness that is now Moab.. it’s good, keep em all in that area and save everything else for the rest of us

Camped in the Squaw Flat group site with my family and did a fun day trip excursion up Davis Canyon to see the 5 Faces pictograph.. been many years since I’ve been up that way and it was a really fun drive and absolutely is a beautiful place :sunglasses: here’s a few of the pics to share..

Love the Needles District plus Capitol Reef NP - some of my favorite places in the world that I've been to. I try to get down there at least once a year - could spend weeks hiking/backpacking the Needles. I take my somewhat moded Subaru Crosstrek (skids, KO2's, a little lift). I'd take my Jeep, but the Trek is way more comfortable. If the damn thing had a low range and some semblance of approach angle I'd do Elephant Hill. Think the Trek is capable Mogwai? Davis Canyon sounds interesting - in sand the Trek is pretty darn good.

I'm sure you can do it, as long as you have 4-low but you'll sustain some bumper scrapes.

The Subaru Trek wont be able to do Elephant Hill. There are enough ledges and steps that require 4low and more ground clearance than the Trek can offer.

Thanks Mogwai and Anchor Mtr. I figured that would be the case. While it's already got its share of front scrapes, the crappy approach angle and no low range is a deal breaker. Great in sand and snow, but not much of rock crawler. I leave that up to my Jeep TJ. Thx again.
