I guess they call Missouri the "show me" state because it looks like I will have to be shown where to go since there is little info I can find...

I did the Google and YouTube searches and of course there is a lot of info on state parks and all the major tourist attractions and when I sent off for the Missouri tourist package, I got a ton of literature of where to eat and what to buy. Cant find any info on "overland" stuff...non-tourist sites and cool off-road (or at least off major roads) places to camp and hike. I checked the OB section for Missouri and pretty much nothing going back to 2017.

The wife and I are leaving Thanksgiving and doing 2 weeks in Missouri. So far I figured I'd head up I-55 and start around Farmington and work our way thru the Mark Twain Natl Forest and work our way to Lake of the Ozarks and eventually drop down to Table Rock Lake and then head back to the swamp. First time in that area, so I just went and booked some state parks for camping so we have a guaranteed place to sleep while we do some recon and see what else is around.

Anyone live in that area or have any advice on it? Would like to find remote camping and good hiking. The wife likes caves and waterfalls and it sounds like there are a lot of caves in Missouri. Years back, I had asked about Georgia on here and ended up getting some really good info. Info good enough that we spent the next 5 years constantly going back to Georgia and really enjoying it. Can I get that lucky again? Also, on a side note...I do a lot of wood turning and always incorporate our trips with wood hunting. Was in North Carolina years back and found a mill that really hooked me up with some excellent log pieces for bowl turning. I can look up mills, but would rather hear what members on here have to say.

A year ago my son (‘96 FJZ80) and I (‘16 Tacoma) circumnavigated the Mark Twain Nat’l Forest.

Message me and I’ll see if he still has the route.

We took 3 days to do about 200 miles.

I see this thread has over 100 views as of this morning, so while the Peanut Gallery isn't actively helping, they do appear to be as equally curious about Missouri as I am.

I did come across this: some interesting towns to go thru. The population of Tightwad says 69, so that means they probably have a Walmart there..

as for rest of the state...the Ozarks are supposed to be very "hillbilly", so i've been watching Deliverance and taking notes. then it dawned on me...I live in an actual swamp in south Louisiana. I have gators and moccasins literally in my back yard. boat dealerships here outnumber dentists 10 to 1. ANYWHERE I go in the US will be a cakewalk in comparison. so yeah, this is going to be a fun trip with zero worries :grinning:

To familiarize yourself with the Missourians, start watching Ozark and take notes.

that's not helping...

ha!
thanks for the reply and I appreciate the route 66 suggestion...I didn't think about that, but that certainly could have some nice sites that are remote and I definitely like the old RR depot idea. I will plug those two into my searches and i'm sure I'll find some good places.

usually watching movies does help...Adam Sandlers "The Waterboy" is pretty much a documentary of south Louisiana...

Here are a couple tracks to get you started. Hope I uploaded them right. If not let me know.

You can also check out the First Nations Trail. It crosses the entirety of MO.

the food is really good here
I'm not from here...when I got out of the navy in '91, I moved here as a commercial diver in the gulf of Mexico oilfield. ( I caught the oil boom right as it started and the money was insane, so I stayed) over time I bought properties and built strip malls and pretty much got invested here and just made it home. married a really cool Cajun woman that is amazing and we just pretty much travel now and have fun. Louisiana was the LAST place I would have ever expected me to grow roots...

alright...getting packed up and ready to head out tomorrow. wasn't a lot of info on here concerning Missouri, but I'm sure we'll find something worth while and will check out offroadnutz suggestions about route 66 and train depots. if I find some good stuff there, I'll do a thread in the Midwest region in case anyone else down the road is interested in Missouri. (yeah, I know...)
I'll be traveling the next 2 weeks with our pitbull and my wife (red-headed Cajun woman with a very limited sense of humor), so...uh...yeah...should be fun :grinning:

really...

seriously. its going to be great...

Don’t forget the SPAM. <sarcasm>

I can see it now. Your at a “show me” state camp site, your neighbor walks by and you pull a Vanna White to display the freshly opened can of Figgy Pudding, waving your hand in front of it and saying…. Want some!!! They start speed walking and hide their yap dogs eyes from seeing you!!! Why? Because that dog wants some!!

Oh how I need to get a life!!!

UPDATE:

ok....just got back from 10 days trekking across Missouri. I was wondering why nobody was chiming in with info on Missouri when I asked earlier...

after just spending 10 days there, if someone were to ask me about Missouri right now...I wouldn't know what to say either...

So not all that impressed are we…I looked into MO when the Moore Expo was there but decided not to go as the area didn’t have any feature that jumped out to me. So your comment is a confirmation of sorts.
