I am taking a my 2002 suburban on it's maiden voyage at the end of the month. I have been building this suburban for about 2 years now. It will be a 2 week trip spent mostly in UT, CO, WY, and MT. The main stops, in order are going to be Bonneville salt flats, arches, Canyonlands, Moab, Telluride area, Pikes Peak, Grand Teton and Yellowstone. We will be staying in the suburban the entire time. At least that is the goal. We may break down and get a hotel in a bigger city one night. I’m calling it my last hurrah trip because my wife and I are expecting our first child at the beginning of 2019 and that could hinder our adventures for a while. Are they any recommendations for things to do in those areas? I have never explored any of them. Long canyon trail and Imogene pass are 2 trails that I have heard good things about and plan on doing. But I’m looking for recommendations for just general sight-seeing, attractions, restaurants, ETC.

Looks like an awesome trip! Like the wheels on the Burb, fit it well. Bummer your maiden voyage is the last hurrah lol, but sounds like there is plenty of good days ahead! Cheers

Just because you have a child (congratulations) it does not mean that the adventure ends. They can still happen, with the caveat that they are shorter and with increased supplies. Good luck on this trip, I hope its a great one for you.

Black bear and Imogen Passes are both in the Telluride area, which I’m sure you know.

Not sure if they are doable in a Suburban because it’s so big. Someone else will have to chime in on that.

If you were heading further south, I lived in Cedar a City, UT for six months back in ‘07. Some great scenery and scary mountain roads down there. And great open camping areas pretty much everywhere.

Good luck, don’t take any undue chances with the kid on the way. Before you know it, you’ll be back out on the trails with your kid.

I'm not risking Black Bear in the suburban lol. I plan on doing Imogene and engineers pass. Hopefully someone on here can chime in and let me know if those are pretty easy. I am an experienced off-road driver but this will be my first time on a trip where I need to continue for 1000's of miles after so I'm looking at doing pretty mild stuff. Mostly just trails that will get me out in the middle of nature for a day or two at a time.

Thank you. Yes, I want to keep the suburban but the whole reason I chose that platform is to have something that I can just park and climb into the back and sleep. With a growing family I will need to put the second row back in and find more sleeping spots. Definitely not the end of adventure forever but just trying to get a few bucket list items checked off while I have that freedom.

Mommymissle, did you go on your trip? How was it? Particularly the SW Colorado portion. I have a full size pickup(2017 f250) and I'm looking to do some trails on the Alpine Loop this summer. Would love to hear some feedback on navigating through that. Thanks!
