So, I'm trying to plan a trip between a bunch of buddies back home (Chicago) and myself (SoCal) for sometime next year. We have pretty much decided amongst ourselves that Montana is the target rendezvous point, only problem is...none of us have been to Montana. And to make matters a little more interesting, we are all pretty new to the overlanding scene. Not to say we have no experience at all, I myself grew up on a ranch in Texas and have done a fair share of off road driving as well as a minimal amount of recovery. But I prefer to play it safe and say I know nothing as opposed to saying I know anything. I'm wondering if any of you have some good roads/trails we can follow with some good camping and maybe even some fishing? Nothing crazy technical, but minor obstacles and what not are welcome to encourage teamwork and bonding. I'm thinking we are planning on being there about a year from now in the late aug-early sep time for what that's worth.

Also, if anyone has suggestions for weekend runs out here in So Cal I can have some fun in the meantime with I would greatly appreciate hearing those as well.

I'm not from that area, however I just returned to Iowa from a week and a half in Montana, Wyoming & Idaho. We spent a day up in the Pryor's. Really neat area with wild horses. We started out on Pryor Mt. Road off hwy 310. Stopped at the Ice Cave. Towards the top of East Pryor Mt. the road splits. One is Burnt Timber-Tillet Ridge the other is Sykes Ridge. If you take Sykes Ridge about a mile there's Pen's Cabin. I think you could set up camp there.
