Thanks everyone! I have looked through this epic thread and don't see any talk of firewood. Sorry if I missed it. Any other pyros out there planning on bringing some wood? I like big campfires and there will not be much wood to gather out there, just a reminder. If everyone brings a little we can have some fires.
@Joel 11k please check post #394 for the info about firewood. And the rules inside the preserve prohibit gathering of wood.
They also prohibit creating a new fire ring, however we can use an existing rock or steel rings, and there should be plenty of those.

If anyone has a portable fire pit, bring that along, but if everyone brings two bundles, we should have plenty of opportunity to make a decent fire in a rock fire ring.

Giving back. ...or rather taking away.

I have a proposal. I would like to ask everyone on the Mojave Road trip to contribute to keeping this and other trails open by helping to give overlanders a good name and keeping our public lands clean. When I was out there in January, I was a little surprised how much trash there was, I couldn't pick it all up.

Please bring along 1 or 2 extra, large trash bags and spend 10 minutes a day picking up some trash as you go. And probably some rubber gloves if you need.
It can either be after arriving at camp, when you stop for lunch, whenever you see some trash on the side of the trail.

If you can, please do this, if we all help, you may be amazed at how much trash we will find. Many people pulling a little can move a lot of weight!
You CAN make an impact and leave it cleaner than you found it. If you don't have room to carry out the trash, let me know and I can put it on my roof.

Well, you might have to take it to the end of the trail, I can't think of any dumpsters along the way, but then I wasn't looking for them at the time.

I know as we exit after Afton Canyon, there's a dumpster there.

Trasharoo ftw!

I'm down either way, just don't want to haul it back to Half Moon Bay

Just another reason the wait for my Gobi rack is painfully taking too long and is needed on the rig yesterday.

On another note, I have always said, I never understand people that go out into nature to get away or see the beauty, that leave their trash anywhere and everywhere. Just disgusting.

With that, obviously, this is a great idea, that myself and family will love to do. ..........I will need your roof however

Cheers to this idea

There might be a dumpster at Kelso Depot, and it's worth the side trip.

I have a GoPro and my dslr if you guys need additional video angles and footage. Though, I'm not really an experience videographer. I'm more photos than a video guy (but I am looking to developing skills in videography).

And yes to pick up any trash! I'll be bringing a few trash bags in case myself.

I'm planning to bring my drone, some gopros and a handheld video setup (maybe just a phone with grip and mic). We can set up a shared Google Photos album after the trip for folks who want to trade media - I know we all tend to get more shots of other rigs than our own.

If you use the drone try not to offend anyone. Drones are not allowed on National Park Service properties. But you will not offend me by flying it. Heck. I look forward to the video!

Regarding photo-sharing, I was struggling with a good way to share and this is probably the best idea on how to do it.
I like Google docs, but we have to make sure everyone that wants to, has access to it, which is just a housekeeping issue right?
I have everyone's e-mail address, I can send an invite to G/D to anyone that needs it at the appropriate time.

Then, anyone who wants can put together photos and video and put something together for all to see.
Also, I think a thread after the trip would be good to show the best of the best photos and links to videos.

Yeah we can create a link to the album and post it here, then give access to whoever follows the link and asks. I can manage that. It's also a lot easier than posting images to the forum, same for video.

I re-reviewed the rules that are attached to the permit, and that I will be required to keep with me, there is no stipulation that says drones are not allowed in the Mojave Preserve.
There is a paragraph about 'commercial filming... blah, blah', this is not a commercial enterprise.
I haven't heard that they are not allowed in NPS areas. Do not enlighten me further.

One less item / case to pack in the trailer. Will bring cameras for ground filming.

It's complicated, but I'm not going to get into the issues here. Maybe a good campfire discussion for those interested.

Broadly speaking, I think drone use in general is one of those cases where the primary issue is to be a responsible operator - don't fly it near people (especially people not in your group), don't fly it near wildlife, and keep it in control. I fly a very small drone (size of your shoe, basically) so it's pretty low-key unless you're standing next to it when it lands. I'm not a fan of people who use them anywhere near a tourist lookout or major site where they're impacting other visitors' experience of a natural wonder.
