Hi! I'm planning a trip to complete the Mojave road, Im unsure if I want to do it west to east or east to west yet. But I am coming from Northern CA. I am planning on taking 6 days off. I just wanted to see if any of you all had any must see spots such as monuments or campsites. Also, I believe 6 days is alot for the Mojave road, If i complete it early are there any trails you'd recommend doing afterwards? Thanks in advance!

Have you chosen a time of year to do it? The NPS just announced that the soda Lake portion has reopened. I’ve only done a few sections myself but the Lava Tube is great and don’t miss the Mojave Road mailbox, which isn’t far from the tube.

I’ll let others chime in on recommended length of time. If you do end up with an extra day or two, either J Tree to the south or Death Valley to the north would be worthwhile additions, if you haven’t already seen them.

That’s probably a great time to be there. Also, there’s a Trail Guardian cleanup planned for the Mojave 3/24-3/26, in case you feel like returning. There will be a few groups driving down from NorCal.
I probably won’t be able to do that this time unfortunately but I would really really love to be involved in a trail clean up this year

I like to run it east to west. 6 days sounds like a lot, but 2 of them are going to be travel days. That leaves you with 4 days on the trail. You can easily spend 4 days out there. There is so much more in the Mojave Preserve than just the Mojave Rd. How much driving are you willing to do in one day?

I’m willing to drive about 5-6 hours a day. I want to also make sure I stop and explore a bit of the surrounding area like the lava tubes

I can send you the route with everything around it. If you want it, PM me so I don't forget. This is POI and diffrent camp spots. I run it twice a year and camp in the area quite a bit. Four days is a nice trip, three days you only see most, two is a dead run just to say you did it. I would definitely go east-west. That way you can grab a hotel in Laughlin, freshen up, fuel up and resupply if needed.
When you say six days is that complete from home and back or six days on the road. If its six day on Mojave Road, I would suggest running it for three, Cutting the end off (not much left except rail bridge and water crossing which is filled in) and go home through death valley.

It’s an overall 6 day trip. So the first and last day will include driving to and back from the Bay Area

Would you mind sharing with me? Going to be going down for the clean up and wanted to camp a few extra nights?
If not it’s all good. Thought I’d ask…

These threads are awesome and informative. I’ll be heading out to the Mojave road running east to west March 19th - sometime when I’m done ;)

This is my first time on OB. This community seems pretty helpful so far. Keep up the good work!

Apple Valley. Nice place to see apple trees (heh, I love the story behind the name).

I'm pretty much the same with my time out there. I went with my son last year because he felt like running it again. We spent four days and just explored the areas around it. Didn't spend much time on the road itself. I love heading out there just to camp without a time frame.
