Hi everyone. New here to the app and community. Figured I'd try this out after watching some of the community YouTube.

We're currently heading to Death Valley in our new Jeep Compass Trailhawk. Probably not the most ideal overland vehicle, but hoping to give it a proper dirt test in DV.

My partner and I are looking into trying out Steel Pass and Dedeckera Canyon and curious if anyone out there has experience going through it, traveling from Saline Valley to Eureka Dunes.

Few people have told us that our height clearance isn't enough for the trail (our jeep has 8.5 inch clearance). Hoping someone here can confirm we're or too short to take it on or at least offer tips for getting through.

Hoping we run into another group we can tag along with, in case we need help. But we'll see. Either way we'll have an adventure and I'll be sure to post how it goes.

Thanks in advance!

I wouldn’t try it in a stock Compass. Last time I went through the stock vehicles all ended up at least scraping and some damaging their rocker panels. Those included 4Runners, and an FJ Cruiser. That being said, my trip was 2 years ago, and conditions may have changed. Also, I would strongly recommend not doing that trip in a single vehicle. That trip was on my list for years, before I was able to do it with a group. I’ve gone all over Death Valley solo, but that’s one of the few trails I wouldn’t do in one vehicle.

I'm curious what others think, but that definitely sounds like a "no" to me in a Compass - even if it's the Trailhawk trim. Some much good stuff to wheel in DV, so I'd focus on easier stuff to start out with - Steel pass is much too stout for a 'first experience' IMO (unless you were driving a Rubicon or similar).

I've been through there with 8" clearance at the diffs a few years back. I have heard on the Saline Valley forum, Saline Preservation Association , that last winter/spring storms changed it and it is more difficult now, as is the sand by Eureka Dunes. I know nothing about the capabilities of a Jeep Compass, so I would also say go with another group. Also Dedeckera is easier going S to N and The road to Steele N to S as those directions are downhill. Marble bath should be lovely this time of year!
