Looking for Suggestions

I’ve got 9 days to burn in September. Looking to make a trip out west. I live in Nashville, Tennessee. Would would be the best use of my time? All suggestions welcomed! Will be my first long distance multi day overland trip.

Hi Charles! It would probably help if you were a little more specific about what you are looking to do. Trails, terrain, dispersed camping, sites of interest, etc.? "West" is a pretty big place and many varied Parks, Forests, BLM lands, mountains, deserts, and more. Once you zero in on what you're looking to accomplish it will be easier for some of the more knowledgeable to steer you in your preferred direction. Hope that helps a little. Oh, and look at some maps to find a few good areas to explore.

Colorado possibly. Dispersed camping as much as possible. Two days on the road each way and a week exploring. Been thinking about Telluride. Been there once back in college. That would be 1400 miles from home.

If you push it, you can make it in one day. I made it in a Ryder truck from Phoenix to Memphis in a single shot. It was a long ass day, but I made it. Gives you an additional day to adjust to the altitude. I like to arrive in the general vicinity and take my first and last day in a hotel. Arrive to go grocery shopping, get a good nights rest and make sure there are no issues like closures due to Covid, forest fires, mudslides, etc. On my last day I drive out, stay in, shower (at least twice) eat a big meal and prep for travel home.

I have a trip coming up in 5 weeks to Creede/Ouray/Silverton/Montrose/Moab. Driving straight through to Creede (Alamosa has more hotels) then 3 days on trails, a single day hotel, 3 more days on a different trail and arrive in Moab. Stay 2 days and drive home.

As for where, scour the map and videos at trailsoffroad.com. Video, waypoint description, camping locations of all of the trails around the Ouray/Silerton/Lake CIty/Telluride area.
