If you want great camping and wheeling, try Big Bend Ranch State Park over the NP.
Nicer rangers, less crowds, remote camping and some fun wheeling.

Great tip! Thanks - I've heard the trails are pretty dang rough in the SP, and I'm a novice wheeler. Are there plenty of trails that are suitable for a stock-height 4x4 like mine in there?

Yes there are, my first time down there I was on stock suspension.
I would still go with at least 1 other vehicle though. Safety in numbers.
The first time I went, we stayed outside of Terlingua and visited the two parks.
This last trip, I moved from campsite to campsite in the state park.
Next trip I plan on exploring the NW side the whole time. It's the most remote section.

So I would try the road to nowhere for your first time.
it's pretty easy, but there are drop offs.
In the state park, drive all the way east to "Tres Papalotes".
If there are people camping, stop and say hi, check that there isn't anyone already up on the trail, as it's a single lane trail.

Nice weekend to bring in spring. First tome towin this 19 footer up the moyntain on the trails, managed to keep her upright and not part of any tree, so thats a plus haha. Didnt make it to the spot at the top of the mountain till 2 am in the rain, but havin a heated and dry cabin made it worth it!

Just returned from Moab! Fantastic trip. Explored Canyonlands, White Rim, Shafer Road, Potash Road with five adults and four children in the Suburban. Picture taken at Colorado River Overlook, not far from Musselman Arch.
