US West July Ouray/Silverton/Telluride/Lake City/Moab/Toquerville Falls

This is the Rally Point for the July Silverton trip. The trip will consist of all terrain types throughout 5 different states. Camping will be dispursed although we will be close to town in CO. 2 days in UT, 7 days in Silverton CO and then 4 days in Moab and 1 day back.

Thanks Dave. Let me know if you are able to make any part of the trip. The 15 rig cap is mainly for traveling out that way due to potential space constrains.

Hi Jesse, My wife and I just got back from a 12 Day trip, 3 nights in Moab, 3 nights near Dolores, a Snow storm in Telluride, Ouray and Silverton. The Avalanche Brewing Company is worth the stop... ; ) If you're planning to visit Arches N.P. while in Moab, you'll need to purchase "Timed Entry Permit" in advanced. We watched lots of vehicles being refused entry. National Geographic - has an excellent Topo Map for Telluride, Ouray, Silverton and Lake City. The Uncompahgre National Forest Travel Map is good too... Our trip was 14 miles short of 2500 miles. Great Country. David

Thanks for the info, we did Silverton last July as well. Such a special place. This will be our my first time in Moab, so I’m super stoked. We will definitely look into the “timed entry passes”

Moab has a Brewing Co., as well. The Canyonlands are huge in land space, It's almost impossible to do Islands in the Sky and Needles, in the same day. There are 4X roads in the Park, you need a trail pass, and if camping an overnight pass for designated camp sites. It's Deep and Wide, holds the confluence of the Green River dumping into the Colorado river. Look up Shafer and White Rim trails. DG

I hope everyone is well and the rigs are mostly in order. I know that I have a few things I need to finish up before the trip. Just checking in to see how everyone is doing.

I also wanted to bring up the subject of Bears. Bears are a very real possibility where we will be camping in Colorado. Last time Jason and I are there we used a large Pelican case to put all of our trash in every night. For our food the items were kept in a fridge or airtight container. We didn’t have any issues.

One option is to make a trash run into town every night for those that don’t have a solution. I am likely going to be bringing another Pelican case for my trash.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Pine oil is your friend. I wipe down all food prep surfaces with a diluted pine oil concoction. It smells nice and bears don’t like it. I know because they told me.

I'm based in Aspen, and we have to deal with a lot of bear issues around here. Hard-sided bear cannisters stored a few hundred feet away from your site are considered a good method to store food and/or garbage. The local bear specialist for the Forest Service said that "hanging" your food, which has been considered good practice for decades, is becoming less effective since too many bears have figured out to go for the rope, not the food.
