Man that's a big can of worms to open. We just got back from 9 days in Ut and Az area and had a chance to see a varity of trailers, rtt, trailers with rtt and all I can say is there is no one solution nor is there a correct answer to your question. For us the solution is 3 trailers configured for different types of travel. We have a 4 person tear drop build going on now to support the family on campground family type vacations. We are looking to add a offroad trailer that my son and i can sleep in and haul toys on top for more off road type adventures and finaly a true go anywhere drag through anything overland trailer. We have tried for two year's to find the perfect multi use trailer and couldn't. I would say start with a list of what you feel is the most important specs your trailer would need to get you where you want to be. Check out every trailer you can and build what will work for you.

We did a diy trailer with a roof top tent and like it a lot. The box is 4x5 and pulls great on and off road and the TJ would pull it with no problem. we leave all the gear in it so we can just hook and go without having to load and forget something. If your staying in one place a few nights unhook and you have a base camp. But its not a one size fits all look around you will find what will work for you.
