I'm taking some holiday leave from the Navy and unfortunately my wife has to work, so I'm making my trip to see family and friends in Kenosha, WI my first overland adventure. The trip features cheesy roadside stops like the World's Largest Peanut and a Giant Lady's Leg sundial... but most importantly navigates the entire western half of the Georgia Traverse trail system.
I'm looking for tips on things to see and do along the way from anyone who has traveled the route, or just some cool advice. The tentative agenda/stops are below.... but totally optional.
Dec 10th:
Vehicle Inspection
Dec 12th:
0600: Hit the Road from Jacksonville, FL
0900: World's Largest Peanut in Ashburn, GA
1100: Whistle Stop Cafe (from the film Fried Green Tomatoes) in Juliette, GA
1300: Stone Mountain Park in Stone Mountain, GA
1600: Begin the Georgia Traverse from Rome, GA, working Eastward
1900: Set up camp on the Traverse, or as a backup plan the Raccoon Mountain Campground-Chattanooga, TN
Dec 13th:
0800: Vehicle Inspection
0900: Hit the Road
1100: The Parthenon in Nashville, TN
1300: Diamond Caverns Cave in Park City, KY
1400: Big Mike's Rock Shop in Cave City, KY
1500: Kentucky's Stonehenge in Mumfordville, KY
1700: Bartholomew County Veterans Memorial in Columbus, IN
1900: Giant Lady's Leg Sundial in Lake Village, IN
2100: Arrive in Kenosha, WI
I have basic recovery gear, and tools/tire repair kits. I have the Georgia Traverse maps downloaded onto my phone, since there might not be signal out there. Any tips/advice are highly appreciated.
